SAIL Amsterdam 2025 | BGYB
Join the 10th edition of SAIL Amsterdam in August 2025, as majestic tall ships from around the world sail in to mark Amsterdam’s 750th anniversary.
United by waves!
In 1975, SAIL was first organised in the port of Amsterdam to celebrate the 700th anniversary of the capital. Given the great success of the event, it was decided to repeat this initiative every five years. To ensure the smooth running of the organisation, the SAIL Amsterdam Foundation was founded in 1977. Over the years, SAIL has become one of the ten most important global events, freely accessible in the Netherlands. In 2020, SAIL could not take place due to the pandemic, so the 10th anniversary edition was postponed to 2025.
In 2025, Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, celebrates its 750th anniversary, the 50th anniversary of SAIL and its 10th edition SAIL Amsterdam. This summer, the spectacular Sailing Ships will return to Amsterdam from all sides, under the motto: "SAIL connects the world!".
In its previous edition, this event had more than 10,000 Ships and approximately 2.3 million visitors.
Against the stunning backdrop of international tall ships, millions of visitors from all over the world will experience top-class entertainment on the water, while Amsterdam's IJ harbor will be decked out in orange as will the NDSM shipyard.
Traditionally, SAIL opens with the SAIL-In Parade. It is an impressive spectacle in which a fleet of tall ships and historic vessels sails through the Amsterdam IJ. A highlight for visitors and members of all crews!
The tall ships and their crews inspire the many spectators of SAIL with their traditions, history and dynamism. Their presence provides an opportunity to discover different cultures and nationalities. Thousands of ships, including many international tall ships and vessels from the Dutch fleet, will also be in attendance. Some will be participating in SAIL for the very first time. Some will even participate in SAIL for the first time.
A few of these remarkable ships can already be seen on SAIL.nl..: the flagship CLIPPER STAD AMSTERDAM, the BAP UNION from Peru—one of the largest sailing ships in the world, making its debut in Amsterdam—the magnificent EL GALEÓN from Spain, and the ARM CUAUHTÉMOC from Mexico, returning for the first time since 1985. Additionally, the SHABAB OMAN II will be showcased for the first time ever at SAIL!
SAIL welcomes visitors from all around the world! It’s a spectacular celebration on the water and along the quays—an event by and for "Nederland Waterland" (Dutch Waterland), featuring inspiring Wavemakers. The theme of SAIL 2025, "Creating Waves!", perfectly reflects the event’s mission. The Wavemakers—pioneers and changemakers in sustainability, inclusion, and talent development—will use the maritime world as a platform to raise awareness and inspire action on these important topics, making waves for a better future.
A new feature planned for SAIL 2025 is SAIL On Stage. This consists of four evenings of concerts in the unique setting of the tall ships. Each evening has its own atmosphere and musical style.
For businesses, exclusive business cruises are available—perfect for hosting clients, colleagues, or groups in a truly special setting.
Amsterdam, surrounded by water, with its monumental buildings and rich history, once again welcomes the world of sailors and maritime history enthusiasts. It is a grandiose spectacle that awaits you in the port of Amsterdam, along the North Sea Canal, on the quays of the port of Amsterdam, on the decks of the moored tall ships and also on the decks of the traditional fleet.
